A Bluesman with a talent as big as his home state of Texas. Andrew was a protege of Freddie King (he was only 16 when he joined one of the greatest Blues Guitarists of all time) and was the guitarist and band leader for Charlie Musselwhite’s band during it’s heyday. Fresh from a jaw dropping performance at this year’s Chicago Blues Festival, “Jr. Boy” has been knocking out audiences and critics alike.
"A Stunningly Accomplished Blues Guitarist"
- Living Blues
Andrew was born October 16, 1948 in Dallas Texas to musical parents. His mother Gladys was a vocalist with an orchestra. She bought him his first guitar when he was seven years old. Andrew began his professional career at age 16 playing with one of the Blues great guitarists, Freddie King.
In 1967 Jones join R&B, soul singer Bobby Patterson and the Mustangs. They signed with Abnak Records and recorded several 45 singles on the Jet Star label. During this time he met session guitar great Cornell Dupree, a friendship that led to many performances and recording sessions together.
In 1973 Freddie King asked Jones to join his band again. They toured excessively opening for rock groups such as Grand Funk Railroad, Rare Earth, Tower of Power, Marshall Tucker Band, and the list goes on and on. Andrew stayed with Freddie as his band leader for several years.
In the 80’s Andrew worked with R&B singing great Johnny Taylor. In late 1987 Andrew went to California to join Russell Jackson, and Tony Coleman as the Silent Partners. Jackson and Coleman are both known for their work with B.B. King. The Silent Partners did extensive session work and touring with different artist such as Katie Webster, Charlie Musselwhite, and opened for the Neville Brothers, and Leon Russell with Edgar Winter. In mid 1988 Jones along with Jackson and Coleman recorded with Katie Webster on her critically praised Alligator Records album, (Swamp Boogie Queen).
In 1989 Andrew and Charlie Musselwhite were recording on a Sonny Rhodes album and they hit it off immediately. Later Musselwhite talk to Jones about starting a band. In the early to mid 1990’s they recorded three critically acclaimed albums together , Ace of Harps, Signature, and In My Time. In 1995 the band won a W.C. Handy award for Best Blues Band.
Andrew returned to Dallas in 1996 and later that year signed and recorded his first CD for J.S.P. Records `` I Need Time``.
In 1998, Rounder Records released Andrew’s second CD ``Watch What You Say`` and was nominated for a W.C. Handy award for best new blues artist, sort of ironic for a seasoned Blues man, but it was in recognition of Andrew breaking out on his own.
In 2001, Andrew’s third CD ``Mr. Domestic`` was released on his own label Galexy Records. In 2005, Andrew his fourth release and his first live CD ``Jr. Boy Live``, again to critical acclaim.
For his fifth release ``Gettin`Real``, Andrew has signed with Electro-Fi Records out of Canada, a label featuring such Blues Greats as Snooky Pryor and Mel Brown. Andrew thinks that this is some of his best writing to date. Andrew Jr. Boy Jones has toured the globe several times over, has had songs featured on television shows and commercials, and continues to garner critical acclaim. Few artists play with the control, class and style that Andrew does, truly one of the best and not to be missed. His 4 piece band features John Street on keyboards, a veteran on the Blues scene for over 40 years, spending over 20 with Sam Myers and Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets.
